Patient choice planning and improvement guide

NHS England and NHS Improvement have co-developed a CCG choice planning and improvement guide for CCGs to assess how well patient choice is working in the services they commission.

Phones down at Southwark Carers

We are having difficulties with our phones this morning (26.9.14) and are unable to either make or receive calls. We are aiming to get this problem rectified as soon as possible, but we must apologise for the disruption to the service we provide in the meantime.

London tube strikes

The London tube strike means that some of our team are finding getting to work takes slightly longer – with some (no doubt) finding ingenious ways to cross the city. To that extent we apologise as we may take slightly longer to get back to you today and tomorrow.

Exercise can reduce risks of certain cancers in women

More physical activity could reduce cases of cancers such as bowel, breast and womb by 12,000 a year, research has suggested. The UK has the tenth highest rate of cancers linked to lack of exercise in the world, and the research recommends healthier lifestyles as a way to better protect women against the women.

According to the report, ‘just 36% of British women meet the government’s recommended physical activity guidelines of at least 30 minutes of moderate activity five days a week. After not smoking, maintaining a healthy weight is the best thing to do to reduce cancer risk.’

Potential ‘breakthrough’ in Alzheimer’s cure research

There has been what has been labelled a ‘turning point’ in the attempts to find an eventual treatment for Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and other degenerative diseases. Scientists from the University of Leicester have provided the first ever proof that neurological degeneration can be delayed in animals, and there is hope that this will eventually lead to finding a way of combatting some of the most damaging neurological conditions in humans.
