Southwark Council – older people insight project

Southwark Council would like to improve their understanding of older people, living in Southwark, who do not require Adult Social Care Services.

There are many people in Southwark who do not rely on social services for help and they would like to make sure they are providing the services which are needed today, and in the future.

They have produced a short questionnaire which can be downloaded here or mailed to you if you call in to the office.

Value of carers’ services put at £814m per year

The Princess Royal Trust for Carers has found that an investment of less than £5 million in services provided by five Carers’ Centres resulted in at least £73 million worth of social gains in a year. The Trust has published its findings in a new report titled “Carers’ Centres: What impact do they have.”

The report written by Baker Tilly is a social return on investment analysis that evaluates the impact of the support given by five Carers’ Centres over a number of years. Looking across the whole network of 144 Carers’ Centres supported by The Princess Royal Trust for Carers, the independent analysis estimated the gain based on total funding of £57m to be in the region of £814m per year.

Unpaid carers save £119 billion a year

New estimates, calculated by charity Carers UK and the University of Leeds, show the care provided by friends and family members to ill, frail or disabled relatives is now worth a staggering £119 billion every year.

The figure has risen by over a third since the 2007 estimate, which stood at £87 billion.

Carers’ contribution now far outstrips the total cost of the NHS (£98.8 billion).

The figure amounts to £2.3 billion per week and £326 million per day.
