More than 80% of unpaid carers are worried about cuts to services, according to new research for Carers Week 2011 (13-19 June). Almost half don’t know how they will cope as the axe falls on some of the vital support they rely on.
The cuts to services compound the financial sacrifice people make when they start looking after someone who is ill, frail or disabled. Three quarters of those surveyed say they are worse off financially since taking on their caring responsibilities.
The Mayor of London Boris Johnson today praised the work of carers in the capital and across the UK, whose important contribution to society as well as loved ones often goes unnoticed.
There are an estimated six million carers in the UK, with almost 680,000 in London, though this figure is thought to be higher. Around 2.3 per cent of carers in London are aged under 16. Many will be juggling other responsibilities such as work or school. This year’s theme is “The True Face of Carers” and the aim is to dispel myths and reveal the realities of their situation.
The Princess Royal Trust for Carers will be featured on the BBC Lifeline Appeal BBC One, on 19th June.

Serious concerns have been raised by the NHS care regulator about the way some hospitals in England look after elderly patients.
The Care Quality Commission said three had failed to meet legal standards for giving patients enough food and drink and treating them in a dignified way.
