Among the hundreds of flyers and giveaways being distributed to delegates during party conference season there is a newspaper doing the rounds with the headline “Benefit Fraud Exposed!”. So far, not so unusual – we’re accustomed to certain sections of the media slamming welfare handouts.
But this spoof paper is slightly different. The Daily Stigma has been produced by the mental health charity Mind to highlight how people claiming sickness benefits, particularly those with mental health problems, are being unfairly demonised by parts of the press.
On October 22 October disabled people, their families and friends will be taking to the streets in cities across the UK to protest against Government cuts to disability benefits and services, like DLA and ESA.
A national Hardest Hit demonstration and march was held in London in May and many people joined to protest against planned changes, but we know many more people weren’t able to travel that far on the day.Â

Of the UK‟s approximately six million carers, around half are aged over 50. A recent survey of carers inEnglandshowed that people near or over retirement age undertake a high proportion of caring. Although on average, 12% of the population provide unpaid care for a friend or family member, this increases to 18% for those aged 55–64, 16% for those aged 65–74 and 13% for those aged 75 and above.
Since 2010, the Government has been committed to increased choice and personalisation in NHS funded services. Choice for patients can be about the way care is provided, or the ability to control budgets and self-manage conditions. Additionally, the NHS Constitution states that “You have the right to make choices about your NHS care and to information to support these choicesâ€.

The London Wildlife trust based have created a gardening and reminiscence project for the over 60s in the  borough.
Using a mobile garden they can visit care homes or local groups to work with people to sow seads, make lavender bags, smell the scent of flowers and herbs and reminisce about the good times over tea and biscuits.
