Basic care given to elderly in hospital ‘alarming’

Too many hospitals in England are falling short in the most basic care they are giving elderly patients, inspectors say.

The Care Quality Commission carried out unannounced visits at 100 hospitals to assess dignity and nutrition standards.

It identified concerns in 55 cases, describing the findings as “alarming”.

Relatives told to help care on busy hospital wards

Nurses’ leaders sparked fury yesterday by telling families to look after elderly patients themselves on busy wards.

Relatives were stunned to find they were expected to feed their frail loved ones and take them to the toilet because of under-staffing.
