What the 2012 Budget means for carers

In the Budget, the Chancellor announced a number of significant changes to the Government’s tax and spending policies. Whilst measures which will lift low earners out of income tax and cut taxes for middle-income earners will benefit carers who are able to juggle work and care, Carers UK is concerned that the Chancellor indicated that the Government will consider further cuts to benefits by 2016.

Take an aspirin a day and you may keep cancer at bay

It has long been prescribed to people with heart problems but new research has shown it also has tumour-busting effects.

A daily dose of aspirin – costing as little as 1p – reduces the risk of colon, lung and prostate cancer by half and lowers the chances of cancers spreading by 36 per cent.

Community living helps tackle loneliness

Care home provider, Anchor, has highlighted the benefits of community living in the wake of the first summit on loneliness.

The summit, which was hosted jointly by Minister of State for Care Services, Paul Burstow, and the Campaign to End Loneliness, called for a joined up approach to tackle the big problem of loneliness and launched new online guidance for councils to help them tackle loneliness.

Low staffing levels ‘harms elderly care’

The care of the elderly is being compromised in UK hospitals because there are too few nurses, according to the Royal College of Nursing.

Research by the union suggested everything from basic communication to care for the dying was suffering.
