Light therapy potential probed in disease fight

Scientists at the University of St Andrews have begun a project to develop new light technology that could improve the diagnosis and treatment of disease.

The team will work to overcome current obstacles that limit how light penetrates a cell to assess its health.

Researchers believe the work could eventually have implications for the detection and treatment of conditions such as Alzheimer’s and epilepsy.

Millions affected as tax and benefit changes come in

Tax and benefit changes announced by Chancellor George Osborne over the past 18 months are set to come into force on Friday, affecting millions of people.

The amount of income that is tax free is to rise by £630 to £8,105. The value of some benefits will rise by 5.2%, linked to inflation last September.

Rosa Monckton’s care campaign

Sir Bob Geldof, Harry Enfield, Ruby Wax and Liz Hurley are among the latest public figures to join Rosa Monckton’s Adults In Need campaign.

They have joined more than 6,000 who signed her e-petition calling on the Government to ensure cradle-to-grave care for people with learning disabilities. If it secures 100,000 signatures, the issue will be debated in the House of Commons.

Two-thirds of a million people are dedicating their lives to caring for people with dementia, according to a new report highlighting the hidden cost of the disease on society.

Most are looking after husbands, wives, mothers, fathers or friends on a one-to-one basis, many with little support from elsewhere.

Carers UK and the Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE) are launching a new reablement briefing at the Southwark Resource Centre today.

Southwark Council will host the launch event for the briefing, which aims to help families access intensive social care support to help older and frail people get back on their feet after ill-health or a hospital stay.

Kinship carers ‘being let down’

Children being cared for by family and friends who are not their parents are being let down by local authorities, a charity has said.

Family Rights Group has conducted research with Oxford University’s Centre for Family Law and Policy which, it says, shows “a major lack of support” for “kinship carers”.
