The Princess Royal Trust for Carers has found that an investment of less than £5 million in services provided by five Carers’ Centres resulted in at least £73 million worth of social gains in a year. The Trust has published its findings in a new report titled “Carers’ Centres: What impact do they have.â€
The report written by Baker Tilly is a social return on investment analysis that evaluates the impact of the support given by five Carers’ Centres over a number of years. Looking across the whole network of 144 Carers’ Centres supported by The Princess Royal Trust for Carers, the independent analysis estimated the gain based on total funding of £57m to be in the region of £814m per year.

New estimates, calculated by charity Carers UK and the University of Leeds, show the care provided by friends and family members to ill, frail or disabled relatives is now worth a staggering £119 billion every year.
The figure has risen by over a third since the 2007 estimate, which stood at £87 billion.
Carers’ contribution now far outstrips the total cost of the NHS (£98.8 billion).
The figure amounts to £2.3 billion per week and £326 million per day.
More than 80% of unpaid carers are worried about cuts to services, according to new research for Carers Week 2011 (13-19 June). Almost half don’t know how they will cope as the axe falls on some of the vital support they rely on.
The cuts to services compound the financial sacrifice people make when they start looking after someone who is ill, frail or disabled. Three quarters of those surveyed say they are worse off financially since taking on their caring responsibilities.
The Mayor of London Boris Johnson today praised the work of carers in the capital and across the UK, whose important contribution to society as well as loved ones often goes unnoticed.
There are an estimated six million carers in the UK, with almost 680,000 in London, though this figure is thought to be higher. Around 2.3 per cent of carers in London are aged under 16. Many will be juggling other responsibilities such as work or school. This year’s theme is “The True Face of Carers” and the aim is to dispel myths and reveal the realities of their situation.
The Princess Royal Trust for Carers will be featured on the BBC Lifeline Appeal BBC One, on 19th June.
For over twenty years, BBC Lifeline has helped raise money and increase the profile of hundreds of charities across the UK and abroad.
The appeal will be a unique opportunity to tell people about the work of The Trust and why we need more support for the UK’s unpaid Carers.
You can help the UK’s six million Carers by watching the appeal and telling your family, friends and colleagues to tune in to learn more about the work we do.
