CREATE – Young Carers Project

Create use the power of the creative arts to transform lives.

Create design and deliver projects that enable those who are excluded through disability, disadvantage, ill-health, imprisonment, poverty or social isolation to participate in high quality creative arts experiences.

All projects enable participants to develop creativity, learning, social skills and self-esteem.

The Office for National Statistics estimates that nearly a quarter of a million children in England and Wales are caring for a relative, whilst 27% of young carers aged 11-15 miss school and 68% experience bullying and social isolation.

Many care for 50 plus hours a week – more than the average adult working week.  Create uses the creative arts to help young carers develop trust, social skills and supportive relationships with their peers, enhance their self-confidence and self-esteem, and most importantly have fun away from their caring responsibilities in a safe, non-threatening environment.

Founded in 2003, Create has run more than 4,500 creative arts workshops that have helped transform the lives of more than 26,500 disadvantage and vulnerable participants, mainly as part of sustained, life-changing programmes.

Every project helps to create a society that is fairer, more caring and more inclusive.

Earlier this year Create in association with KIDS Siblings Project ran a multi-art form project with different groups of young carers. The first group took a range of photographs at venues including Surrey Quays Shopping Centre and Surrey Docks Farm, these were used as inspiration for music activities, which has in turn been used as the soundtrack for dance participants to create original choreography.

All media was combined and a performance at the Surrey Quays Shopping Centre showcased the music, dance and photography to an audience of friends, family and the general public.
