Adult Learners Week – How Musical Are You?

Have you ever wondered how musical you are? You may be more musical than you think! BBC Lab UK are currently involved in a study with Goldsmiths, University of London, to discover the musical abilities of the nation and help to redefine what it means to be musical.

Being able to play a musical instrument is only one aspect of being musical. Those who often listen to music may be particularly sensitive to certain aspects of music and some may not even realise that they have a musical ‘ear’.

Studies have tended to only compare musicians with non-musicians but scientists can learn a great deal about how music can shape the brain by also considering musical listening and engagement. A recent study has shown that the level of an individual’s engagement with music may affect their verbal memory (words and language).

In addition to questions about your engagement with music, the study also tests your ability to memorise tunes and group different musical styles together. At the end of the test you will receive an individual musical profile. Fancy testing your musical abilities?
