Young carers wanted for national educational survey

Are you a young adult carer (16-25) who would be willing to take part in a short interview?

As part of the ‘Who Cares?’ project NIACE would like to conduct informal interviews with young adult carers (16-25) – we want to find out about their experiences of learning and how these experiences could be improved.  We can offer each young adult a £15 gift voucher to thank them for sharing their experiences with us…

Previous research undertaken by NIACE has shown that young adult carers experience significant disadvantage and that they are often unable to engage in learning and achieve their potential.

NIACE believes that all young adults are entitled to participate in learning, gain a voice and access services that meet their needs and enable them to aspire and achieve.  On this basis, NIACE has gained funding for a project entitled ‘Who Cares? Promoting Family Focussed Learning Opportunities for Young Adult Carers’.  We are keen to hear about the needs and experiences of young adult carers, and to develop materials to support them to effectively engage in learning.

If you are able to offer any expertise around support for young adult carers, or if you are in contact with any young adult carers who you think might be willing to take part in an informal interview, please contact me on 0116 2047059, or e-mail nicola.aylward@niace.org.uk

Go London Social Innovation Competition

The Go London Innovation Competition is an opportunity for Londoners
to go online and share what inspires them to get active as well as submit their original and innovative ideas about how to boost participation in physical activity. Through Go London, the NHS and partners are working to increase physical activity participation among Londoners on the run up to 2012.

Join the conversation
NHS London & Sport England are launching this innovative new online project to stimulate conversations about the best ways to get active and how to overcome some of the barriers. Through the online conversation, they aim to raise awareness and interest in physical activity among Londoners, of whom half are currently classed as ‘inactive’.

Enter the competition
Through the bespoke website, they are also interested in hearing innovative ideas that could make a difference to participation levels in London. The top ideas will compete at a workshop to be hosted at City Hall for the opportunity to be developed and turned into a reality.

Get involved!
Anyone can get involved in the online discussion so they would encourage you and your colleagues, family and friends to participate in the conversations and to take the opportunity to raise issues that you feel would make a difference to getting people active. Join the conversation on the social innovation network site at - www.go.london.nhs.uk

Win an I-Pod in this Young Carers Study

The Princess Royal Trust for Carers are working with the University of Nottingham to find out what pupils who have to look after a parent or guardian need so that they, and other organisations, can provide the right sort of support and services for them and their families in the future.

Why do we want to talk to you?

We want to know more about young people who care for a parent or guardian, and what difference this makes to their school life. To do this we need to talk to both young carers and those who do not care for a parent or guardian.

The research report created will be used by those who can provide services for young carers.

To take part you MUST:

1. have the permision of a parent or guardian;

2. be aged between 5-16 years old.

The survey will take about 20 minutes and you will need to know your school grades or predicted grades.

These answers will be kept private, safe and confidential. Your name or details will never be made public.

If you have any questions please email Meredith Beaumont at lqxmb7@nottingham.ac.uk, phone 07949024011 or write to me at the school of Sociology and Social Policy, University Park, University of Nottingham, NG7 2RD

Three out of four suffer depression: survey

Three out of four people in the UK suffer from depression at some point but only a third seek help, a poll found today.

Women are more likely to feel depressed than men, with 80% saying they regularly or occasionally feel down or unable to cope.

Money is the biggest cause of depression, with more than half of all people surveyed saying they have felt down about money over the last 12 months.

Men are particularly likely to have linked their depression to the recession, whereas women have been worried about family or relationships.

January is regarded as the most depressing month of the year, caused by post-Christmas credit card bills and cold weather.

Zelda Peters, director for mental health at the charity Turning Point, said even mild depression needs to be identified and treated early.

“We know that, if diagnosed early, mild depression can be successfully treated.

“If not, it can escalate and lead to unemployment or long-term sickness, and even to negative behaviours such as drinking more, missing work or college and lying to family and friends.

“Most people think anti-depressants are the answer and for some people they are.

“But there are a huge range of treatments beyond this on offer, such as psychological therapies which provide effective long-term relief.”
