Carers get stress like office staff

Unpaid carers who look after sick or disabled loved ones suffer from seven of the top 10 workplace stresses, a study out today reveals.

They see their duty as a labour of love but have many of the same problems as overworked and underpaid staff in offices and factories nationwide. Many lack control over their day, work overlong hours, deal with huge frustrations and feel undervalued.

Other burdens are their heavy workload, type of work they do and having to take on other people’s jobs, the report by over-50s campaign group Saga said.It found one in four never took a holiday or even had a short break from their caring responsibilities.

A spokeswoman for Saga said: “Many are simply pushed to the point of extreme exhaustion but cannot simply hang up their hat for a few days to get a break.”
