Action needed on training for dementia carers

BBC Inside Out examines the weaknesses in the quality of training and care on offer to people with dementia in care homes and hospitals.

This week, the Care Quality Commission (CQC) published its inspection report, Cracks in the Pathway, which found dementia care is variable in some care homes and hospitals in England.

The quality of care for people with dementia is too often ‘unacceptable’ according to the CQC’s chief inspector of adult services, Andrea Sutcliffe.

The report is the CQC’s first national investigation into dementia care across England. It recommends appointing training inspectors and a national specialist adviser for dementia care.

Sally Magnusson, who has written about her own family’s experiences of dementia, looks at whether better training is needed for dementia carers.

Inside Out is broadcast on BBC One England on Monday, 13 October at 19:30 BST and on the iPlayer for 30 days thereafter.
